We love being "Just" Appraisers

We don’t buy or sell diamonds, watches or jewelry, so we won’t appraise your engagement ring below market value then offer to buy it. We won’t produce a deflated appraisal of the diamond you bought online, then try to sell you one of ours. We’re not diamond merchants or jewelers, wholesale, retail, or otherwise. We’re Just Appraisers.

Our team is built on an “ethical compass” that has high standards and a dedicated drive to always learn. This enables us to openly discuss quality and how we estimate the value of your jewelry, diamond, gemstone, watch and other valuables.

  • David Wolf of Just Appraisers is the finest example of a professional in the gemology trade. His knowledge, dedication, passion, and ethical compass in his profession are second to none. I have retained David and Just Appraisers as an independent gemological expert on a number of catastrophic property losses throughout the United States. His understanding and knowledge on the subject is outstanding and his demeanor and compassion for clients and claimants is exemplary. I, without hesitation, would recommend David and Just Appraisers to anyone.

  • I can’t say enough good things about Just Appraisers. They transformed what would have been one of my most difficult and stressful experiences, buying our engagement ring’s diamond, into a totally enjoyable one. Their level of knowledge and professionalism combined with the patience and kindness needed in these kinds of situations has no parallel in NY. They treated me as part of their wonderful family and helped me save and incredible amount of money. For all of this I will be forever grateful.”

    Miguel Riglos Managing Director
  • Just Appraisers is the best in the business. Their attention to detail and professionalism sets the bar very high for their industry. David Wolf’s eye for appraising jewelry is laser sharp. He has a tremendous amount of expertise in his field, a deep wealth of knowledge for various stones, is very thorough and provides a very fair and accurate market appraisal. I would use them again in a heart beat!

David’s Story – A Generational Business

Our Beginning

Our Beginning

My family jewelry business began in the late 1800’s in Hungary with my great grandfather, the village butcher. He bartered chickens for used pocket watches, salvaging the steel mainsprings and converting them into butcher knives by straightening them out and wedging them into wooden shafts. With cannibalized pocket watches laying around and so many visits to the watchmaker – his son, my grandfather – Simon Wolf, took more to fixing watches than slaughtering chickens.
After World War I, Simon emigrated to the US and repaired watches in Pittsburgh, PA before opening a shop in Derby, Connecticut. At the end of World War II, my father, Alexander Wolf, joined the family business after returning home from the air force. He added an artistic side to the business and developed special order jewelry designs. I remember him saying, “Our customers need to see the watch maker and the bench jeweler in plain sight.”

Fast Forward

Fast Forward

In 1976, I graduated Rutgers and taught High School in NYC. In 1978, my family business needed help in the store; with no inclination towards watchmaking or jewelry making, I took care of ordering their supplies. I met the dealers, the suppliers, designers and manufacturers while making weekly trips into the city.

In 1983, while I was a student at GIA, I had the pleasure of meeting with Eunice Miles; she was an institution within GIA’s career placement department and had an uncanny knack for marrying personalities. She called Jack Abraham, a prominent Gem Importer, and so it goes, I met my mentor. He armed me with his black box of fine rubies. I carried his gems into the finest retailers, designers and manufacturers in New York.

In 1985, I met my wife and began brokering gemstones on my own. After that short stint, I began buying, selling and appraising under the umbrellas of Macy’s (1986) and Windsor (Estate) Jewelers (1995).

Just Appraisers

Just Appraisers

In 1995, I earned my Master Gemologist Appraiser® designation. Soon after, the American Society of Appraisers awarded me with the Accredited Senior Appraiser (ASA) credential. My wife, Lynn, and I finally opened up a small appraisal lab in 1998.

In 2001, with the tragic 911 World trade Center attack, we were contracted as the appraiser’s of record for those who lost contents stored in safety deposit boxes of JP Morgan Chase. Our independent and ethical approach to clients’ concerns began to level out the anxiety and fears of all those involved in the settlement process. And so, the “Just Appraisals triage” team was forged. We went on to manage recovery and valuation teams for Hurricane Katrina and Super Storm Sandy. Our team is ready for any size challenge. We have the professional resources to meet the needs of individuals, including Banks and Insurance groups, law enforcement agencies and patent attorneys.

I am a contributor to accent.chubb.com where you can read about the gemstone market and antique cut diamonds. I have interviewed with Inside Edition and National Public Radio. I served on the Board of Governors for the American Society of Appraisers. I developed and chaired programs for ASA’s Gems & Jewelry International Conferences and presented “How to Develop Appraisals for Post-Loss Events” with National Association of Jewelry Appraisers (NAJA). I am dedicated to transparent and authentic disclosure… delivering my clients the highest standards a professional appraisal practice can offer.
